Auto Insurance in Camden County, GA: Coverage Types Explained
Almost everyone buys auto insurance, and almost no one fully understands it. Barlow Insurance Agency has helped drivers across Kingsland, St. Marys, Woodbine, and Camden County get the right coverage since 1987 — so here’s a plain-language guide to what Georgia requires and what each type of coverage actually does.
What auto insurance does Georgia require?
Georgia requires every driver to carry liability insurance, and the state minimum is written as 25/50/25:
- $25,000 for bodily injury to one person,
- $50,000 for bodily injury per accident, and
- $25,000 for property damage.
Georgia is an at-fault state, which means if you cause a crash, you’re responsible for the other people’s injuries and property — and your liability coverage pays those costs on your behalf. Liability is the only coverage Georgia legally requires; everything else is either optional or required by your lender. You can confirm the current minimums anytime on the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire site.
The main types of auto coverage, explained
A full policy is built from several coverages that each do a different job:
- Liability — pays for the injuries and property damage you cause to others. Required by Georgia, and the part that protects your savings if you’re sued.
- Collision — pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after a crash, no matter who’s at fault.
- Comprehensive — covers your vehicle for things that aren’t collisions: theft, vandalism, fire, falling limbs, and storm or flood damage. On the coast, where a single hurricane season can do real damage, this one matters more than people think.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) — pays for your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Georgia requires insurers to offer it, so you’d have to actively turn it down — and with the number of uninsured drivers on the road, we rarely recommend doing that.
- Medical payments — helps cover medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault.
- Add-ons like rental reimbursement and roadside assistance — small line items that save a lot of headache when you need them.
Is the Georgia minimum enough?
Usually not. The 25/50/25 minimum keeps you legal, but it doesn’t go far in a serious wreck. A single hospital stay can blow past the $25,000 per-person bodily injury limit, and if you’re at fault, you’re personally on the hook for whatever your policy doesn’t cover. For most drivers, raising those limits — and adding UM/UIM — costs less than expected and protects a lot more.
This is the kind of thing worth talking through rather than guessing at, because the “cheapest” policy and the “right” policy are often not the same one.
