RV Insurance in Camden County, GA: Full-Timer vs. Recreational Coverage
Whether your RV is for long weekends at the coast or it’s the place you actually live, the insurance behind it isn’t one-size-fits-all. Barlow Insurance Agency covers RVs of every kind for owners across Kingsland, St. Marys, Woodbine, and Camden County — and the right policy depends a lot on how you use yours.
Does my auto or home policy already cover my RV?
Not the way you’d want it to. A motorhome you drive is a motor vehicle in Georgia, so it has to carry at least the same liability minimums Georgia requires for any car — but a basic auto policy usually isn’t built for a motorhome’s size, value, or the belongings inside it.
A towable RV — a travel trailer or fifth wheel — is different. Because it isn’t self-propelled, it doesn’t need its own liability policy; your tow vehicle’s auto coverage handles liability while you’re hitched up. But that auto policy won’t pay to repair the trailer or replace what’s inside it after a storm, a theft, or an accident. That’s the gap RV coverage fills.
Full-timer vs. recreational: the question that changes everything
This is the single most important thing to get right, because it changes what coverage you actually need.
Recreational use is the common case: you take the RV out for trips, vacations, and weekends, but you have a regular home to return to. A standard RV policy — physical damage, liability for motorhomes, contents, and roadside assistance — usually fits.
Full-time use is when the RV is your home, or close to it. If you live in your RV most of the year, you need full-timer coverage, which adds protections that look a lot like a homeowners policy: broader personal liability for accidents at your “residence,” more personal-property coverage, and loss assessment. A recreational policy can leave a full-timer dangerously exposed — and a full-timer policy is overkill, and overpriced, for someone who camps a few weekends a year.
Getting this classification right is exactly the kind of thing that’s easy to guess wrong on your own.
What RV insurance can cover
A well-built RV policy can include:
- Physical damage — collision and comprehensive for your RV, including storm, fire, and theft.
- Liability — for motorhomes, the same role liability plays on a car.
- Personal belongings — the gear, electronics, and furnishings you carry inside.
- Emergency expenses — lodging and travel if your RV becomes unlivable away from home.
- Roadside assistance built for big rigs — towing a motorhome is not the same as towing a sedan.
- Total-loss replacement on newer units, and full-timer’s coverage when the RV is your residence.
